White paper 'Benefits and opportunities of bioeconomy value chains'

The White Paper 'Benefits and opportunities of value chains in the bioeconomy', the result of the ALPLINKBIOECO project, has been published.

What are the market and social potentials of bio-based economies in the Alpine Space regions? Are business best practices available? What are the key indicators for implementing an ideal value chain in terms of key actors and processes? These are some of the fundamental questions and issues addressed in the document, which aims to raise awareness among stakeholders, companies, cluster managers, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers regarding the benefits and potential opportunities of the bioeconomy, provide suggestions on how to generate new business opportunities, encourage the exchange of information, and support analyses to identify potential business partners in the Alpine Space regions with a view to creating new value chains.

It includes facts and figures, best practice cases including commercial success stories, requirements for SMEs to implement
the bioeconomy, analysis of the current industry dimensions in the "Agro", "Wood", "Packaging for Food and Pharma", and "Chemistry" sectors, and a comparison with the overall economy across sectors and regions. The white paper also provides input for the implementation of new bio-based values.

The AlpLinkBioEco project aims to develop an interregional strategy based on the bioeconomy that includes a roadmap and demonstrators for the assessment, intelligent selection, and creation of innovative Value Chains. The project analyses the various regions and districts in terms of size and value in the "Agriculture" (Agro), "Wood", "Packaging for food
and pharma", and "Chemistry" sectors. To reach the ambitious final goal, the following specific objectives will be achieved during
the project:

- map existing relevant resources, actors, and policies to establish an interregional database. This will allow for the identification of missing links within VCs, strengthen synergies between small and large actors, and improve economic
sustainability to ensure local employment;
- develop a methodology (VC generator) to match demand-oriented actors in new VCs. The VC generator is developed, tested, and automated throughout the project to generate numerous potential new VCs;
- generate new business opportunities within and/or across regions using the links as indicated in the new VC identifiers.
