Innovative startups in Italy: over a quarter are based in Lombardy

The Ministry of Economic Development MiSE (Directorate General for Industrial Policy) – in collaboration with InfoCamere and supported by the Chambers of Commerce network (Unioncamere) – has recently published the quarterly monitoring report on the demographic trends and economic performance of innovative startups in Italy.

As of 1 January 2021, there were 11,899 innovative startups in the country, representing 3.2% of all recently established limited companies.

The Lombardy region ranks first with 3,218 innovative startups, accounting for 27.04% of the national total; Lazio is in second place with 1,383 (11.62%) and Campania is third with 1,053 (8.85%).

At the provincial level, Milan alone accounts for 2,282 (19.2% of the total), a figure significantly higher than the second-ranked province, Rome, which has 1,237 (10.40% of the total), and the third, Naples (529 units, 4.45%).
