The European Innovation Council (EIC) Advisory Board – an independent body comprising prominent entrepreneurs, researchers, investors, and innovation experts – has published a report entitled “A vision and roadmap for impact”, aimed at defining an effective strategy to establish European leadership in future technologies and industries.
The report recommends the introduction of KPIs for social, economic, and diversity impact. While commending the new approaches adopted in the current EIC pilot project, the Advisory Board calls for an improvement in its implementation, including by drawing lessons from the venture capital sector. In this regard, the introduction of shorter and simpler applications is desirable, with rapid feedback and an agile decision-making process.
According to the report, to better bridge the gap between technological research and market opportunities, the EIC should create portfolios of projects within similar thematic areas, so that they can be actively curated and managed by EIC programme managers. Finally, the Board highlights the importance of the technologies and startups supported by the EIC for European businesses and investors.
