The European Commission has published its first report on strategic foresight

The European Commission published its first strategic foresight report on 9 September, with the aim of identifying emerging issues and opportunities to better guide the Union's choices. Strategic foresight helps to improve policymaking, develop appropriate future strategies, and ensure coherence between short-term actions and long-term objectives.

The report examines the EU's resilience across 4 different dimensions: social and economic, geopolitical, green, and digital. For each dimension, the report identifies the capabilities, vulnerabilities, and opportunities highlighted by the coronavirus crisis, which must be addressed in the medium and long term.

The Commission has been using strategic foresight for many years and now aims to integrate it across all sectors to fully harness its strategic value. This integration will be achieved through various methods, such as: systematically conducting foresight activities for all major strategic initiatives, publishing annual foresight reports that identify emerging trends and issues to guide policy and decision-making, supporting the development of foresight capabilities within EU and Member State administrations, and establishing a collaborative and inclusive community to carry out these foresight activities.
