LIFE programme: over €280 million awarded to climate and environment projects

The European Commission has awarded over €280 million to more than 120 projects under the LIFE programme. These projects were selected from over 1,250 proposals submitted in response to the LIFE call for proposals with an April 2019 cut-off date.

This European Union funding will stimulate investments of nearly €590 million, which will collectively contribute to achieving environmental, nature, and climate action objectives. It is worth noting that this represents a significant increase of 37% compared to the previous year. It should also be noted that many of these projects are transnational in nature.

In terms of funding allocation, the approved projects concerning environment and resource efficiency, nature and biodiversity, and environmental governance and information will receive approximately €220 million, while projects focused on climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as climate governance and information, will receive over €60 million.

The projects will contribute to achieving the goals of the European Green Deal, supporting the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the circular economy action plan, while providing impetus for a green recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
