As part of the "Societal Challenges" under the European Innovation Council (EIC) of Horizon 2020, we would like to highlight the Fuel from the Sun: Artificial Photosynthesis prize, which focuses on the subject of artificial photosynthesis.
The prize of €5 million will be awarded to the applicant who successfully develops a fully functional, small-scale prototype of a photosynthesis-based system capable of producing usable synthetic fuel. The new solution must be able to produce this fuel through an artificial photosynthesis process that combines water, sunlight, and carbon from the air.
Artificial photosynthesis is considered one of the most promising technologies in this field, and the prize aims to stimulate innovation to create a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
The competition is open to any natural or legal person – including international organisations – and groups of legal entities, and applications may be submitted until 3 February 2021.
The competition rules can be downloaded in the attachment.
