The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) officially launched GIview on 25 November, the new search database for geographical indications (GIs) in the EU.
The database is an excellent resource for consumers, producers and intellectual property professionals, as it contains detailed information on both EU GIs and non-EU GIs protected at EU level through bilateral and multilateral agreements, as well as EU GIs protected in third countries.
GIview provides key information such as the type of GI (PDO, PGI, GI), the priority date, the legal status, and the basis of protection for all GIs covering wines, spirit drinks and aromatised wines, as well as agricultural and food products protected at EU level. A unique feature of the database is that it is open to national authorities and producer groups, allowing them to upload data such as contact details for GI producer groups and control bodies, as well as maps, photographs, product descriptions, the relevant geographical area, sustainability statements and other useful information.
