LIFE Open Call: €571 million allocated to green initiatives

From 18 April, applications can be submitted for the LIFE call for proposals: the EU funding instrument for promoting actions for the climate and the environment.

The programme, active since 1992, brings green ideas to life and has, to date, co-financed over 5,500 projects throughout the EU and in third countries.
For the 2021-2027 period, the European Commission has increased LIFE Programme funding by almost 60%, to €5.4 billion, and has included the new sub-programme for clean energy transition. The LIFE programme is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

This year, €571 million will be made available to those who submit successful green projects.

Specifically, depending on the type of project, the following budgets are provided:

1) Standard action projects (SAPs)

  • Nature and biodiversity - €155 million
  • Circular economy and quality of life - €65 million
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation - €61.98 million.
  • Clean energy transition - €4 million.
  • New European Bauhaus - €8 million
  • Environmental governance - €10 million

2) Coordination and support action grants (CSA)

  • Clean energy transition - €77 million

3) Strategic integrated projects (SNAP/SIP) - €150 million

4) Technical assistance for the preparation of SIP and SNAP (TA-PP), replication, capacity building or legislative and policy priorities - €26 million

5) Specific operating grant agreements for NGOs - €14 million.

The call is aimed at businesses, academic institutions, national, regional and local governments and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working in the EU on nature conservation, environmental protection, climate change or clean energy transition.
LIFE supports innovative and impactful projects, with demonstrable effects and good practices that can be replicated and disseminated in other parts of Europe.
Applications for LIFE projects can be submitted by a single organisation or by multiple organisations working in collaboration with other European partners.

The deadline for submitting an application will depend on the type of project of interest.
