The European S3 thematic platforms (Industrial Modernisation, Agrifood and Energy), launched by the European Commission in 2016, serve as a support tool for the preparation and implementation of smart specialisation strategies for research and innovation in European regions. They aim to stimulate the development of innovative investment projects within the European Union by incentivising interregional cooperation. Lombardy is among the most active regions: it is involved in 13 partnerships, 10 of which are in Industrial Modernisation, 2 in Energy and 1 in Food, thanks to the activation of Lombardy’s technological clusters, which act as the Region’s technical arm, bringing innovative projects resulting from collaboration between local businesses and research centres to a European level.
