The European Commission has announced the results of the Horizon 2020 Health Societal Challenge call: 75 projects have been selected, involving a total of 58 countries. Following the signing of the grant agreements – expected in the coming weeks – the selected projects are set to receive a total of 508 million euros to address a wide range of critical health challenges and opportunities.
The majority of the funding – amounting to 440 million euros – has been awarded in the form of 60 grants for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA). In addition, these have been supplemented by 4 Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) actions totalling 23 million euros and 3 ERA-NET Cofund grants amounting to 27 million euros. Finally, 8 Coordination and Support Actions (CSA) have also been approved, with a value of 18 million euros.
The funds will support the development of digital diagnostics and various new interventions, including treatments and vaccines, with specific actions targeting cancer, brain-related diseases, and infectious diseases. Particular attention is also being given to the management of complex chronic conditions and the development of health interventions for elderly patients suffering from multiple pathologies. These funds will also enable researchers to better understand the health impacts of micro- and nano-plastics, address environmental, climatic, and socioeconomic factors to improve urban health and well-being, and work towards assessing the safety of chemicals without the use of animal testing.
