European Innovation Council: new instruments and an end to Phase 1 of the SME Instrument

The European Commission has approved the update to the Work Programme “Enhanced European Innovation Council 2018-2020” for Horizon 2020, which is attached. Provided below is a summary of the key changes, which anticipate several actions planned for the next European framework programme for R&I, Horizon Europe:

  • Pathfinder, which will support collaborative projects on frontier research technology under the FET Open and FET Proactive programmes, following the Research and Innovation Action funding scheme with a contribution of up to €4 million;
  • Accelerator, dedicated to companies and scale-ups with ambitions for growth in global markets, which integrates the Phase 2 funding scheme (70% non-repayable co-financing from €500,000 to €2.5 million) with the option to request an equity contribution (blended finance) of up to €15 million from October 2019. Project activities nearing commercialisation (from TRL 8) will only be eligible for funding through the blended finance instrument. Details on how to access the equity contribution will be provided
  • Elimination of the SME Instrument Phase 1, with the final deadline for project submissions being 5 September 2019
