Renewable energy: EU study highlights the economic benefits for European industry

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy has recently published a new study regarding the benefits that investments in the renewable energy sector can generate in terms of boosting growth, employment, and the competitiveness of European industry.

According to the study, however, achieving these objectives necessarily requires the elimination of a series of administrative issues and obstacles that are currently slowing down the process.

Focusing on the competitiveness of renewable energy technologies in the heating and cooling sectors, the first part of the study highlights—for example—the importance of creating a European market in these two sectors, where carbon prices are internalised to ensure a level playing field and increase the competitiveness of renewables compared to fossil-based solutions.

The second part shifts the focus to corporate sourcing of renewable energy. Although this improves the competitive advantage of European companies, it is noted that they often struggle to source renewable energy; for this reason, the report includes an analysis of these obstacles in ten EU Member States and provides proposals to facilitate the use of power purchase agreements.
