European elections: results and the new composition of Parliament

The European Parliament elections took place on 26 May. Voter turnout was 50.94%, an increase compared to 2014.

The European Parliament will be composed primarily of members from the Group of the European People's Party (EPP), which secured 180 seats, thereby failing to reach a majority.

A total of 145 seats were assigned to the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), followed by 109 seats for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE&R) group.

A notable change since 2014 is the performance of the Greens, who secured 69 seats (17 more than in 2014) and are now the fourth-largest group within the European Parliament.

Since 2009, under the Parliament's rules of procedure, a political group must consist of at least 25 members elected in at least seven Member States.
