EIC Pathfinder Challenges: calls for proposals are now open

On 15 June, the European Commission opened the call for applications for the EIC Pathfinder Challenges programme, a Horizon Europe instrument with a budget of approximately €132 million.

This programme supports the early stages of research and technological development for radical innovations capable of addressing global challenges or creating new market opportunities.

It is aimed at research centres, universities, large enterprises, SMEs, startups and spin-offs, either as individual entities or in consortia.

The 5 challenges identified by the European Commission for this programme are:

  • Awareness Inside: developing new theoretical and technological tools for awareness that are applicable to artificial intelligence systems.
  • Tools to measure and stimulate activity in brain tissue: designing diagnostic and therapeutic technologies that leverage opportunities offered by recent technological advances (e.g. microelectronics or non-invasive imaging).
  • Emerging technology in cell and gene therapy (CGT): developing new technological solutions and/or innovative concepts that go well beyond the current state of the art in the field.
  • Novel routes to green hydrogen production: devising solutions for producing green hydrogen that are entirely based on renewable sources and non-toxic raw materials.
  • Engineered living materials: developing innovative technologies and platforms for the production of living materials.

The deadline for submitting a proposal is 27 October.
