The fourth annual conference on the EU budget, “EU budget for the future – the road ahead”, was held on 12 October with the aim of continuing the dialogue with stakeholders regarding the definition of the 2021-2027 EU budget.

During the various sessions, which featured numerous representatives from European institutions, including the President of the CoR, EU Budget Commissioner Oettinger, and European Commission VP Katainen, the following priorities were highlighted

• Reaching an agreement on the future EU budget, at least regarding the ceilings for individual chapters, before the next European elections;
• Digitalisation, climate change, research & innovation, infrastructure, and solidarity, with particular implications for border protection, as priority investment themes;
• Cuts to the 2021-2027 EU budget due to BREXIT, which will primarily impact the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.
