Lombardy International Trade Focus - MERCOSUR

An analysis of trade between Lombardy and the MERCOSUR countries confirms the strength and structural nature of the economic relations between the two regions. The Lombardy region is distinguished by a significantly positive trade balance, supported by exports heavily oriented towards manufactured goods, particularly machinery and industrial technologies, which meet the development and modernisation needs of South American markets.

Imports from MERCOSUR, while at lower levels than exports, play a strategic role in the supply of raw materials, agri-food products, and essential production inputs for Lombardy's supply chains, reinforcing the complementarity between the two economic systems.

Overall, Lombardy's positioning within the national context confirms its role as Italy's primary player in trade relations with MERCOSUR.

Looking ahead, the strengthening of relations between the European Union and MERCOSUR and the evolution of regional integration processes offer further opportunities for Lombardy's businesses. These can be fully realised through policies that support internationalisation, the strengthening of industrial competitiveness, the protection of production chains, and a regulatory environment conducive to the development of trade.
