Lombardy - Australia International Trade Focus

Australia, whose economy has been characterised by stable growth and resilience to crises in recent years, represents a solid partner with significant potential for Lombardy.

In 2025, trade between the two regions amounted to €1.5 billion, with a trade balance clearly in favour of the region: exports totalled €1.27 billion (23.75% of the national total), while imports stood at €213 million.

The sectoral distribution of exports to Australia shows a clear prevalence of manufacturing. In particular, machinery and equipment, transport equipment, food products, beverages, and tobacco, as well as chemical substances and products, stand out.

At a territorial level, Milan is the primary hub for trade with Australia, accounting for 35% of regional exports with approximately €438 million. This is followed by the provinces of Varese (23%), Brescia (11%), Bergamo (9%), Monza and Brianza (6%), and Mantua (6%).

Imports from Australia, by contrast, are characterised by the absolute predominance of basic metals and metal products (€145 million), with the province of Mantua being the primary destination for these imports (59% of Lombardy's total imports from Australia).
