Moi Composites secures the prestigious EIC Accelerator grant

The company has established itself as one of Europe's most innovative tech startups thanks to the CFM4Industry project, which will bring Continuous Fiber Manufacturing technology to the market.

Moi Composites Srl, established as a spin-off of the Politecnico di Milano in February 2018, has rapidly made a name for itself in the innovative startup landscape thanks to its revolutionary technology in the field of 3D printing for composite materials. Founded following academic research conducted in the "Giulio Natta" Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering, Moi Composites developed CFM (Continuous Fiber Manufacturing) technology with the aim of introducing a new digital production method to the market capable of processing composite materials with continuous fibre reinforcement and a thermosetting polymer matrix.

CFM technology enables the creation of three-dimensional objects in composite material with glass, carbon, aramid, and natural fibre reinforcement. By leveraging proprietary algorithms and robotic systems to optimise the position and direction of the fibres, the CFM system eliminates superfluous weight (by up to 70%), reduces production costs and lead times, and produces high-performance composite products without generating waste.

Initially conceived for the construction of marine products (as in the case of the MAMBO – Motor Additive Manufacturing BOat project), CFM technology has rapidly attracted the attention of other industrial sectors, including the biomedical field. In this specific sector, collaboration with the Enterprise Europe Network and Digital Innovation Hub Lombardia enabled Moi Composites to secure Phase 1 of the Horizon 2020 SME Instrument in 2020—a recognition that confirmed the company's innovative potential within the European context and from which Moi Dental Srl originated. The latter uses CFM technology to create reinforcements for dental prostheses, entirely conceived and manufactured digitally (www.hi.fiber.it).

Four years on from this significant milestone, Moi has achieved another major objective, firmly establishing itself as one of Europe's most innovative tech startups following its success in securing one of the world's most coveted and competitive grants: the EIC Accelerator. The CFM4Industry project, submitted by the company, confirms Moi Composites' role as a pioneer in the field of 3D printing for composite materials. With the funding obtained from the EIC, the company will be able to complete the industrialisation of CFM technology and make the production process accessible to the market across various sectors, ranging from marine, automotive, and aerospace to oil & gas and biomedical.

The Enterprise Europe Network team at Confindustria Lombardia has assisted Moi Composites with dedicated services since 2019, providing information regarding access to funding and advice to facilitate and support its participation in various regional and European calls for proposals. These include the EIC Accelerator, which the EEN team explained by outlining its features and operation, as well as the updates and modifications implemented by the European Innovation Council since its launch as a "pilot" in 2019, providing practical suggestions to help Moi secure the grant.
