Krill Design, an innovative circular economy project awarded by the Lombardy Region

The startup has been awarded the "Ricerca e Innova" grant for a project focused on the recovery of food waste.

Krill Design is an innovative startup with a mission to restore value to waste generated by the production processes of companies committed to reducing their environmental impact, by combining sustainability, technological innovation, and creativity.

Specifically, Krill Design gives new life to organic waste from F&B companies, such as peels, seeds, and shells, by transforming it into a biodegradable and compostable biopolymer, which is then used to design and manufacture eco-design products via 3D printing.

The company applied for the Lombardy Region ERDF “Ricerca e Innova” grant with the support of Confindustria Lombardia as part of the Enterprise Europe Network activities. The project, titled SUSTAINABLE FU(RNI)TURE, aims to create an extensive catalogue of materials by leveraging various types of waste from the food sector, using additive manufacturing technology in an innovative way to produce finished goods directly, rather than using it solely for prototyping as is current practice.

The objective is therefore to push 3D printing to its limits to obtain a product that, once removed from the printer, requires no post-production and can be sold immediately. Thanks to the project's significant potential and the assistance provided by the Enterprise Europe Network, the company secured the funding; the project is already underway and is scheduled to conclude in July 2024.
