Description of content and objectives

Presentation of the device developed by the Politecnico di Milano for the long-term culture of cells, cellular constructs, ex-vivo tissues, and human organotypic cultures.

This initiative is part of the Innovation Match Making activities organised by Assolombarda with universities to raise awareness and disseminate the most advanced technologies developed in research centres to businesses, with the aim of fostering collaborations and innovation opportunities for companies.

Specifically, a webinar will be held on 23 June to present an innovative technology developed by the Politecnico di Milano:
MOAB: Optically Accessible perfusion Mini-Bioreactor

This unique device consists of a modular perfusion bioreactor designed for drug testing on human tissues cultured in vitro. The MOAB has a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7, meaning it is a functional prototype in the field, and the technology is the foundation of a start-up currently being established, which is interested in evaluating potential synergies and co-development relationships with industry companies for its industrialisation and/or use.

“The MOAB is the evolution of perfusion bioreactors as we have known them until now” (Prof. Manuela Raimondi, Politecnico di Milano).
To date, perfusion bioreactors, commonly used to provide cell growth models in the pharmaceutical and tissue engineering sectors, do not allow for non-invasive testing (with the exception of observation under an optical microscope).

The main technological features are:

  • improved optical accessibility: the device allows for three-dimensional viewing of cultured tissues;
  • the ability to simultaneously culture up to three independent samples;
  • ease of use of the device: magnetic supports have been designed to hermetically seal the culture chambers and to be easily assembled under sterile conditions.

“Thanks to these features, the MOAB can be considered a 4D bioreactor (the 4th dimension being time) for long-term cell cultures” (Prof. Raimondi).
The bioreactor has been extensively validated using various cell types, including immortalised human cell lines, mesenchymal stem cells, and human neuron-like cells.
The MOAB is a low-cost device, optimised for mass production via injection moulding; it can be sterilised and sold for single-use trials.
The complete technical data sheet for the technology is available on the PoliLink website:
