Risk management in light of the new classification

Formaldehyde

Event venue

Brescia Industrial Association
Via Cefalonia, 60
25124 Brescia

Target audience

This meeting is intended for employers, occupational physicians, health and safety managers (RSPP), and all prevention professionals.

Description of content and objectives

At the European level, the 6th technical adaptation of the CLP Regulation changed the classification of formaldehyde from “H351: Suspected of causing cancer” to “H350: May cause cancer”.
This may have direct consequences for company organisation, such as updating the Risk Assessment Document (DVR), adjusting health protocols, and, if necessary, activating the register of exposed workers.
The meeting will address these aspects from both a toxicological and occupational hygiene perspective, as well as the resulting regulatory requirements.

Speakers will include Professor Pietro Apostoli, Professor of Occupational Medicine at the University of Brescia and Director of the Occupational Medicine Unit in Brescia, and a representative from the Prevention and Safety in the Workplace Service of the Brescia ATS (formerly ASL).

The affected production activities span various manufacturing sectors (chemical, mechanical, healthcare, metallurgical, woodworking, etc.). Formaldehyde is present in numerous applications: among others, it is used as a base for thermosetting resins, in adhesives for chipboard production, as a bactericide in metalworking fluids, and in the creation of foundry sand cores and moulds; it may also be present in disinfectant and biocide formulations. Finally, formaldehyde can be generated as a thermal decomposition product in hot processes (such as plastic moulding and injection, foundry casting, etc.).
