Over recent decades, the rise of populist movements and profound economic and social shifts have impacted the relationship between politics, labour, and collective representation. Globalisation, technological innovation, and new forms of inequality and social insecurity have transformed the role of intermediary bodies, particularly trade unions. Through five European case studies (Austria, France, Italy, Poland, and Spain), this discussion offers a reflection on the relationship between populism, labour representation, and economic democracy. The talk will provide an opportunity to examine these transformations and the challenges they pose to contemporary democratic systems.
