Control over energy sources has historically determined the prosperity of nations and blocs. Today, however, perspectives and strategies are shifting from the raw materials used to produce energy to the technologies required to do so, starting with nuclear power. The need to decarbonise the economy to combat climate change has created geopolitical asymmetries. While the European Union's decision to electrify final consumption may be understandable, the timelines and sectors targeted—such as transport—are far more questionable. The only real energy source we can and must draw upon today is 'knowledge' in innovative technologies. We must reform the system by basing it on a balanced mix of non-programmable and programmable sources. In other words, a progressive transition away from fossil fuels is only possible with the right mix of renewables, the gas that will inevitably remain for the coming decades, and nuclear power. What are the prospects for Italy? What is the timeline for a return to nuclear energy? What opportunities exist for our country's industrial supply chain?
Energy, and nuclear power in particular, will be the focus of the third event in the 'Breakfast Brief: Geopolitics, Technology and Markets' series. Organised by Confindustria Varese and the Young Entrepreneurs Group, the series aims to provide businesses with insights into a global landscape increasingly dominated by political, technological, and market disruptions, as well as the reorganisation of production chains.
The guest speaker will be Riccardo Casale, Senior Energy Advisor and contributor to Limes, the Italian review of geopolitics. He is the founder of a US-based startup and a member of the Energy Advisory Board at the Polytechnic University of Turin. In the nuclear sector, he has served as CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare and Sogin, and as a Director of ENEA and Nucleco. He spent over 15 years with the European Commission's EURATOM, where he held responsibilities at the Ispra research centre. In the broader energy sector, he has served as Chairman and CEO of numerous companies, including IREN Energia, AMIU, and GEAM.
As with previous sessions, the format will consist of a short, informal talk lasting a maximum of one and a half hours, held in the early morning, followed by a discussion.
Afterwards, Riccardo Casale will be available for B2B meetings to provide further insight and guidance to companies on the topics covered during the event. This can be booked at the time of online registration.
The meeting will be introduced by Pietro Conti, Chair of the Young Entrepreneurs Group.
