North-West Logistics General States

Confindustria Lombardia President Alberto Ribolla: integrated regional mobility and manufacturing for the revival of the industrial triangle

Novara, 8 April 2016 – The first day of the North-West Logistics General States, titled ‘Between ports and mountain passes – development starts here’, was held today at the University of Eastern Piedmont in Novara. The event featured the three regions of Piedmont, Liguria and Lombardy, alongside key economic and institutional stakeholders. The three regional Confindustria branches, Confindustria Lombardia, Confindustria Liguria and Confindustria Piemonte contributed to the proceedings through an address by Confindustria Lombardia President Alberto Ribolla.

“Competitiveness is increasingly determined by large regional areas; the regional dimension is now the minimum necessary, though no longer sufficient, scale for addressing future development. The North-West can and must act as a driving force within the national and European context, building on its strengths: the North-West accounts for 40% of national exports, 39.5% of manufacturing value added, 33% of GDP, 29% of the motorway network, 27.5% of air passenger arrivals and 23% of the rail network,” stated Confindustria Lombardia President Alberto Ribolla during his speech at the North-West Logistics General States in Novara.

“Take, for example, the opportunity presented by the Alpine Macro-region: to fully develop its potential,” added Ribolla, “the regions participating in EUSALP must become highly interconnected areas with rapid, efficient and competitive transport systems through greater integration of both digital and transport infrastructure. It is in this regard that the Confindustria branches of the regions adhering to EUSALP have launched the ‘Manifesto for sustainable and integrated mobility in the Alpine Macro-region’, a document strongly supported by Confindustria Lombardia, which has long advocated for the creation of EUSALP as a tool to strengthen the bond between businesses and their territories.”

“We must ensure our manufacturing sector is competitive: this will be possible by integrating manufacturing with the services sector and equipping our territories with interconnected infrastructure to achieve true integrated mobility. Only by overcoming these challenges, within a necessarily broader area, can what was once known as the industrial triangle return to being the vanguard of the country,” concluded Alberto Ribolla.
