Abnormal load restrictions. An appeal from Lombard businesses

Confindustria Lombardia: “It is urgent to restore the operational capacity of the regional production system to avoid damaging one of Europe’s most advanced economies”

Milan, 27 January 2017 –Resolving the difficulties surrounding the issuing of permits for abnormal loads is essential to restore business operations as quickly as possible, whilst maintaining safety standards compatible with normal production activities.

This is the request from the Confindustria Lombardia system regarding the serious situation concerning the granting of permits for abnormal loads that exceed the limits established by the Highway Code. This slowdown follows the collapse of the Annone bridge (Lecco) on the SS 36 last October.

“Lombardy represents one of the most advanced economies in Europe, with a manufacturing focus and a strong propensity for exports – stated Confindustria Lombardia President Alberto Ribolla –. While we understand the caution prompted by the tragic Annone bridge event, the Lombard production system cannot function without rapid and efficient transport.

This unacceptable deadlock is having a severe impact on our businesses, which risk the paralysis of their operations, with potentially heavy consequences in terms of penalties should they fail to meet the deadlines stipulated in client contracts.”

“Confindustria Lombardia therefore requests that the bodies responsible for managing the road network – to whom official requests for urgent action have already been sent, starting with ANAS and the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Del Rio – overcome the current paralysis in issuing permits for abnormal loads so that Lombard businesses, which have already been severely damaged, can resume operations as soon as possible” concluded Ribolla.
